Winterize your Gas Fireplace
At Montigo we recommend you prepare your Gas Fireplace for winter on an annual basis to ensure you have a warm, safe winter season. In North American our winters can vary from one extreme to another, and by following these few easy steps, it will ensure your Gas fireplace operates efficiently all winter long. This requires only a few simple steps, and we have shown them below.
Note: If you have any reservations in following the Instruction guide supplied with your gas fireplace, or your own personal abilities, please contact your Montigo Service Representative for an annual Service inspection prior to the Winter season.
1. First ensure your exterior termination(s) are free of debris: This first step is critical as the termination is the exit point of all your burned gases, and are expelled through the vent pipe to the exterior of your home. The termination, (depending on the model supplied by your Montigo representative / installer) can become partially obstructed by spider webs, birds’ nests and other insect infestations. Also ensure branches are cleared within a perimeter four to six feet from the exterior termination(s). Note: You may not think that a tree can grow that much in one year, but some spieces can grow four to six feet in a one year period.
2. Clean the glass door of your Montigo at least once a month, ensuring the burned components from the Natural Gas, or Propane doesn't build up on the glass: This burned byproduct (indicated by a white film that builds up over time), can be an indication that the fireplace is not burning as efficiently as possible. This should be addressed by your Montigo Service Representative, and be corrected prior to the Winter operating season. Also, this inefficient operation and burning of NG or PG wastes your hard earned money. Lastly and most important, your fireplace may give off fatal levels of carbon monoxide that may not be detected. Refer to your Instruction guide supplied with your fireplace. Or look on the replacement parts page for the Model you have installed in your home. If you cannot find a model number or placard under the fireplace, email us your serial number and we can locate your Model number.
3. Ensure the glass door is secure per. Montigo Instruction guide: Next, check to ensure your fireplace’s glass is held tightly in place with the door clips, see the Instruction guide supplied with your gas fireplace, as poisonous carbon monoxide may escape into your home and create a safety hazard. Insufficient combustion due to moisture and airborne dust can also affect the fireplace’s ability to burn the gas efficiently and effectively.
4. Prior to installation of the Door, ensure the glass is not scratched: The glass is tested in the manufacturing process, and installed into the door under tight quality control specifications. It is designed to withstand all aspects of standard operations, but imperfections such as cracks and chips on improper installation or removal can severely limit its abilities in the future. Please have your Montigo Representative inspect your Gas fireplace if any such imperfections are encountered, or have occured due to improper handling.
5. Locate your logs properly in the Firebox per. Montigo Instruction guide: If your Montigo ceramic log set, which usually consist of one through eight pieces are not positioned properly, the flame color or pattern may suggest inefficient operation and therefore may generate unhealthy levels of carbon monoxide within the firebox and your home. Consult your Montigo Representative if you are unsure of the Log set positioning.
6. Vent free models of Montigo fireplaces: Follow all steps above, and ensure all five steps are taken to ensure an efficient operation of ALL Mechanical parts, doors, vents, latches, terminations, etc. Also have your Montigo Representative check the electronic components of your fireplace on a yearly basis.
